What to Expect

Topanga is a remote-first team with a main office hub in LA, where the team goes in 2-3 days per week. The rest of the team is distributed across the U.S., with a growing presence in NYC. The company strives to compensate and offer benefits that are above market for the given role and stage of the company. Pay may be a combination of salary, commission, and/or equity depending on role and seniority. Full-time employees are eligible for health benefits and 401k enrollment.

Team members should expect a self-regulated PTO policy and a culture that promotes using at least three continuous weeks every year. (Yes, 12 days of camping with no cell service is encouraged—fresh air is good for everyone). The team signs off at 2:30 p.m. on Fridays, observes long weekends, and respects that some days, people wake up and their head just isn’t in it.

Topanga encourages the pursuit of hobbies, passions, and experiences outside of work. The company acknowledges that careers tend to be zig-zags, not straight lines. This is great as long as the time spent working is fulfilling. Basically, jobs do not define people, but they can add purpose.

Who You Are

The ideal candidate likely has at least two years of work experience, but the communication skills of a long-time employee. That means tailoring communication style to fit the audience, whether that’s the Executive Chef, a Director of Dining, or a Sustainability champion at a college campus. Resilience and grit are two of the candidate’s strongest traits—bad days or bad calls don’t stop progress; instead, the focus remains on the next opportunity with optimism. Natural curiosity and world-class listening skills are essential. This individual doesn’t just go through the motions of a call script but engages in real conversation, probing deeply into what a prospect is saying and adjusting the pitch accordingly. Ideally, the candidate has a year of outbound sales experience already, or if not, makes up for it with coachability and resourcefulness. Ultimately, there are goals to meet—and when met, they will be rewarded.

On a day-to-day basis, this person is getting scrappy: identifying prospects, building outreach lists, and engaging with prospects via email, phone, and LinkedIn. Familiarity and proficiency with Marketing & CRM Sales tools such as Salesforce, ZoomInfo, Outreach, and LinkedIn Sales Navigator is expected—or, at minimum, the ability to become an expert quickly (with support from the team). Occasionally, there may be travel to a conference or two to provide support and spend additional time with prospects. This role will be responsible for generating qualified opportunities (meetings!) with net-new clients across Colleges & Universities. This is the tip of the spear in Topanga’s sales efforts, but not the closer—yet.

Salary: $60,000 - $80,000 a year

Total compensation will be comprised of the base salary and variable pay. Salary is in line with experience and market for the candidate. This role will be based in the United States.
